The Community Health Diagnosis Program was Successfully Implemented in Dhading District, Nepal

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Most of the rural communities of Nepal still live under the poor accessibility of health care services, and the public health status is not satisfactory. The availability of actual data on the specific health care status (for targeted health indicators) of the marginalized rural community’s people of Nepal is not good and is too difficult to get it. Most of the private organizations (NGOs & INGOs) are concentrated in urban/city areas and the people, who live far from the government’s eyes, are always biased behind the dark shadow to get even basic health care services properly. In this situation, women and children are the most vulnerable. Therefore a rapid, cost-effective data collection tools and technique is necessary for identifying and assessing the possible option of health problems in the community levels.

Community health diagnosis (CHD) is an appropriate and cost-effective method for identifying the rural community's health problems, planning the programs, and implementing those programs in a short period of time. Therefore, the CHD was carried out at Nilkhantha Municipality, Ward no. 9 Dhading district, Nepal from the National Academy for Medical Sciences (NAMS), Old Baneshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal.

After assessing the health status of the community, we organized the interaction program with the Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) of the Nilkhantha Municipality and discussed many challenges that are facing during the health care service delivery in rural communities. We also prepared the social map, conducted a household survey for identifying top ten health problems, and implemented the school health program on SRHR and WASH in different schools of the Municipality by targeting youth and adolescents among 600+ school students. At the end of the project, we had conducted the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the local women's groups to identify the root causes behind the Uterus Prolapse, which was also identified as a common health problem among married women in the municipality.

The CHD program was led by Mr. Krishna Sharma as a team leader with the other nine members of the group and conducted at ward no. 9, Nilkhantha Municipality, Dhading District, Nepal. It was conducted under the direct supervision of the Department of Public Health, National Academy for Medical Sciences (NAMS), Purbanchal University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

General objective: "To assess the overall existing health status of the community, its determinants, available resources and accessibility of health care services, its utilization pattern and to find out the possible solution to the problems and conduct a need-based short-term micro health project."
